Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 29 & 30

Woohoo! The final batch of reviews!

Day 29: Tooth and Claw

This Side of the Mountain by [info - livejournal.com] wickedwords 3/5
5000 words. Zombie Apocalypse, 10 years later. A fusion with World War Z.
I love World War Z, so I wanted to like this more, but... )

Day 30: Swan Song

Except for a Few Small Bruises by [info - livejournal.com] justbreathe80 3/5
14,800 words. He'd been living like this long enough to know what being scared felt like, and yet this wasn't like any of that. Rodney hadn't wanted to know so that he could hurt John or laugh at him or pigeon hole him as the bratty rich boy. He'd wanted to know John, and John knew that if he could keep from running, he might finally be free.
Cute. )

Coda by [info - livejournal.com] callmerizzo 2/5
1000 words. The silver Swan, who living had no Note / when Death approached, unlocked her silent throat. (Orlando Gibbons, The Silver Swan)
The writing was decent enough, but it feels like the prologue to something longer. )

Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 27 & 28

I only have one fic left to read, then I can post the final batch!

Day 27: Alter Ego

It Doesn't Take a Genius by [info - livejournal.com] roaringmice 1/5
1000 words. Rodney is a man with a mission.
A plot that's been done to death. )

Till It Shines (The Secret Life of Rodney McKay) by [info - livejournal.com] wesleysgirl 2/5
16,000 words. In an alternate universe where John Sheppard is a science fiction writer, he's getting his ass kicked by writer's block and moves to a small town in Maine for a fresh start in the form of one Rodney McKay, who as it turns out is more than meets the eye.
Super Ultra Woobie Rodney! )

Day 28: Skeleton in the Closet

Stars Against the Sun by [info - livejournal.com] almostnever 4/5 Recommended
11,400 words. Fighting the Wraith turns out to be the easy part.
Toppy!John FTW! )

De Las Fantasmas by [info - livejournal.com] gblvr 2/5
3500 words. John has a secret...
Would have been better as a scene in a longer story. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 25 & 26

Day 25: Piece of the Action

Zugzwang by [info - livejournal.com] earlwyn 4/5 Recommended
29,300 words. Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures. Rodney finds that relationships are a lot like that, too.
A bit confusing, but overall enjoyable. )

Day 26: Carpe Diem

Memento Mori (Seize the New Day) by [info - livejournal.com] neevebrody 4/5 Recommended
21,300 words. Disgraced and shunned, Rodney McKay finds a way to fight back with the help of a rogue cop and a motley band of scientists.
Really neat dystopian future. )

Heroes with a Plan by [info - livejournal.com] monanotlisa 2/5
11,600 words. The present was yesterday.
Cute, though I wasn't that thrilled with the last third or so. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 23 & 24

Getting near the end! Soon I will actually be reading and reviewing stuff other than SGA again. XD

Day 23: Sleight of Hand

Like Pulling a Rabbit Out of a Hat by [info - livejournal.com] curia_regis 2/5
5300 words. When they discover alien ships heading towards Atlantis, Rodney has yet another brilliant plan to save them. Unfortunately, this plan goes horribly wrong.
Another one without an ending... )

Imagine Whirled Peas by [info - livejournal.com] flyakate 2/5
1300 words. In which there are failed magic tricks, peanut butter and naps. Or, John and Rodney, Supportive Uncles and Master Babysitters.
Cute. )

Day 24: Open Season

Good Hunting by [info - livejournal.com] skinscript 3/5
8700 words. Atlantis sends teams to compete in the once in a generation Pegasus fighting competition Shaur'Atan. Once there, it's open season and everyone gets more than they bargained for.
Neat idea, though the ending was rushed. )

Daytime Drama by [info - livejournal.com] hyperfocused 1/5
9500 words. Will hero pilot John Sheppard accept the offer to start a new life as soap opera hunk Shep Johnson? Will "Atlantis!" wunderkind Rodney McKay (Rod Ingram/Meredith Ingram/series co-writer) finally win his first Zeddy? Will they find love, on-screen or off? Tune in past the cut to find out.
Ridiculous and offensive. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 21 & 22

Day 21: Fish Out of Water

Grace, Too by [info - livejournal.com] perspi 3/5
1400 words. "One dance, and then we'll talk cease-fire," John promises, using his free hand to carefully slide Rodney's glasses off and fold them into his shirt pocket. "You'll be home in an hour."
Probably would have given it a four or five if not for the ending. )

Day 22: Coup de GrĂ¢ce

The Dread and Fear of Kings by [info - livejournal.com] valderys 2/5
8400 words. They were used to odd happenings and sudden danger, even on Atlantis itself. A woman's voice calling John to come away? That wasn't even a blip on the scanner - until John began to listen to it.
Was interesting at first, but took a sharp left turn into Not My Thing. )

Twice Blessed by [info - livejournal.com] chellefic 3/5
10,800 words. Even when things are peaceful, John can't seem to keep from doing dangerous things.
I wasn't totally happy with the ending, but overall it was pretty good. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 19 & 20

Day 19: Creature Comforts

Technical Perspective: A Civilised Discourse in Interior Design by [info - livejournal.com] pennyplainknits 2/5
13,800 words. Interior Designers AU, based very loosely on the Doris Day movie Pillow Talk. John Sheppard is a reclusive new designer, who invents an alter ego in order to get close to sarcastic but genius designer Rodney McKay, of Athos Partners. But what is truth, and what is a lie? And what will Rodney do when he finds out?
Cute, but reminded me how much I hate the romance novel/romcom formula. )

Bargaining by [info - livejournal.com] elementalv 1/5
3000 words. "Broken. Dick."
Not nearly as interesting as the summary makes it sound. )

Day 20: Writing on the Wall

Late for the Arrival by [info - livejournal.com] deltacephei 2/5
8200 words. It was no secret that people weren't Rodney's strong suit. This was probably the reason why he hadn't caught on before. The proverbial clue bus had rolled by four times before realization finally hit him like an expertly delivered kick to the head.
Cute enough if you like this type of story. )

Travis [userpic]

Feels very real. )

Grounded by [info - livejournal.com] kassrachel 2/5

Enjoyable. )

Travis [userpic]

Day 15: Paper Tiger

Something to Remember You By by [info - livejournal.com] hestia_lacey 3/5

Enjoyable. )

Walking Backwards by [info - livejournal.com] wintercreek 2/5
9300 words. Rodney's getting everything he always thought he wanted. But what if he already had it and didn't know?
Resolved way too easily. )

Day 16: Fool's Paradise

Fly Away by [info - livejournal.com] badwolf36 2/5
8300 words. Rodney has his perfect life with John on a sabbatical away from Atlantis. And a few nightmares were just the rewards of actually surviving to retirement age in the Pegasus Galaxy. Nothing to worry about at all.
Neat idea, but the writing is just not up to the job. )

He Makes a Solitude and Calls It Peace by [info - livejournal.com] villainy 2/5
10,200 words. "I always thought the Vulcans had a point."
Interesting idea, but it felt like it wrapped up too quickly. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 11, 12, 13

There are no reviews for Day 14 because both teams were art, so I'm including Day 13 with this one.

Day 11: Leave of Absence

Wake by [info - livejournal.com] my_scheherazade 2/5
14,000 words. "Oh the blood and the treasure, and then losing it all. The time that we wasted, and the place where we fall. Will we wake in the morning and know what it was for, up in our bedroom, after the war?" -- The Beginning After the End by Stars
Not as good as I'd hoped it would be. )

Day 12: Balance of Power

Epiphanies Aren't Just For Ancients (and Other Hard Learned Lessons) by [info - livejournal.com] reddwarfer and [info - livejournal.com] djin7 2/5
14,500 words. John Sheppard knows that sometimes, the quickest way to end a war is to lose it. But if he has to go down, he's taking Rodney with him.
Decent story, but not really my thing. )

Bland. )

4200 words. "Are we going to crawl in there, assuming I can even fit through that gap, to get our faces chewed off by rodents with space-rabies?"
Could have been good with some editing. )

The Weakness See by [info - livejournal.com] mamadeb 1/5
3400 words. For once, no one was attacking them.
Laughably OOC. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 9 & 10

Oh right, I was posting these... XD

Day 9: Call of the Wild

Storm Front by [info - livejournal.com] lavvyan 3/5
3400 words. "What, so I'm going to end up a vegetable in some hospital bed while my mind goes frolicking among the waves, is that it?"
Interesting, but I felt like it was retreading the same ground as canon. )

Romance Not Included by [info - livejournal.com] danceswithgary 2/5
19,800 words. There's one important thing to remember about islands; the only way to guarantee you'll find what you're looking for is to bring it with you.
Fairly cute, but had some icky misogyny and pacing problems. )

Day 10: Point of No Return

Shine Like the Sun by [info - livejournal.com] busaikko 4/5 Recommended
7200 words. Detective John Sheppard knew Ava Dixon was trouble as soon as she walked into his office looking for her brother.
Awesome AU. )

Those Three Words by [info - livejournal.com] argosy 3/5
5700 words. John has something he wants to say, but it won't be easy.
Cute, though not really my thing. )

Travis [userpic]

Peace doesn't have to mean dull... )

Took a sudden turn for bad at the end. )

Travis [userpic]

Day 5: Dead Letter

The Color of His Heartbeat by [info - livejournal.com] sonadorita 2/5
6300 words. After a tragic explosion, Rodney is caught between believing in alien tales and doubting his own sanity.
Okay story, clunky prose. )

5900 words. Rodney's system is already perfect, but it could be better.
Really cute WWII AU. )

Pulled Out from Inside by [info - livejournal.com] altyronsmaker 1/5
15,400 words. While exploring an uninhabited planet for future recreational use, John's team gets kidnapped, and he must fight his way to the outpost beyond the Ancient City to take back the team that was stolen.
Really contrived and pointless. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 3 & 4

Day 3: A House Divided

War Games by [info - livejournal.com] kisahawklin 2/5
2000 words. Sheppard needed Rodney for his plan to work. Convincing Rodney was the hardest part of the plan.
I didn't really get the point. )

A Heart Needs a Home by [info - livejournal.com] shrift 2/5
5500 words. Sometimes when a door closes, a closet opens.
Feels like I've read it a million times. )

Day 4: Skin and Bone

The Ones You Leave Behind by [info - livejournal.com] taste_is_sweet 5/5 Recommended
30,000 words. "I love you," Rodney said. "You can't die anymore."
Daaaaaaaamn. It's like a super creepy giant robo anime. )

That Will Break You by [info - livejournal.com] mz_bstone 2/5
8500 words. Life can break your bones. It can also stitch you back together.
Interesting idea, but really needed to be fleshed out. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 1 & 2

Well, I still haven't finished reading everything for Match, but I figured now that the names have been revealed, I can start posting the reviews for what I have read.

Day 1: Top of the World

Atmosphere by [info - livejournal.com] indy_go 2/5
2900 words. Nowhere else to go but up.
Cute enough if you like fluff, but even then it's pretty bland. )

Day 2: Tilting at Windmills

Where the Brave Dare Not Go by [info - livejournal.com] telesilla 4/5 Recommended
18,000 words. John Sheppard has had over twenty years to come to grips with the fact that every four or five weeks, he turns into a mountain lion. Like most Were, he accepts that that's just the way it is, and so he's not particularly interested when he learns that researchers at the local university are trying to to develop drugs that will help Were control their cycles. Then he meets Dr. Rodney McKay, a brilliant but irascible biochemist with reasons of his own for spearheading the university's Were research and John suddenly finds himself struggling with more than just his attraction to McKay.
I really enjoyed this, despite not being a fan of the werewolf genre. )

The Ingenious Dr. Rodney McKay of Atlantis by [info - livejournal.com] propinquitine 2/5
10,600 words. Who would have thought that defeating the Wraith was the least of Rodney's worries?
Fairly well-written old-school-feeling slash. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: SGA

Temporary Vanity by [info - livejournal.com] sugargroupie 3/5
200 words. Teyla is not impressed with Earth's hair-straightening techniques.
Cute, though I wish it had gone into a little more detail. )

Paraphiliac by [info - livejournal.com] sabinetzin 3/5
800 words. There are a lot of things that John wishes he could unlearn.
Didn't quite live up to its promise. )

Strangers to Each Other by [info - livejournal.com] telesilla 3/5
900 words. As always, John is a man with a plan.
Awkward sex. My favorite! )

John, When He's Gone by [info - livejournal.com] busaikko 5/5 Recommended
2200 words. He figures John won't know what his virginity would go for on eBay, so he names a price that makes John look at the door, and at the PlayStation, and at the bed.
Creepy and disturbing and oh so awesome. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: lgbtfest '09

First batch of [info - livejournal.com] lgbtfest fics for this year! So far only one that I really, really loved, but I (obviously) haven't read much yet, either.

What a Man's Gotta Do by [info - livejournal.com] sto_helit_lace 2/5
Dr. Horrible. 4600 words. Everyone's got villains they must face. Captain Hammer has never thought this particular villain was very cool at all.
I don't know who this person is, but it's not Captain Hammer. )

Modern Love by [info - livejournal.com] penknife 5/5 Recommended
Discworld. 2900 words. It's amazing how the world rarely gets less complicated.
Totally my personal canon now. )

Sacrifices by [info - livejournal.com] elementalv 3/5
Stargate: Atlantis. 2600 words. John has always been willing to pay the price for his career and to keep his people safe, but he's just found the one price he's not sure he can afford.
Surprisingly good considering how clueless the prompt was. )

Turn the Page by [info - livejournal.com] messageredacted 3/5
Supernatural. 9000 words. Sam hasn't seen his sister in four years. A lot more has changed than he ever imagined.
I would have liked this a lot more if it hadn't been wincest. )

Now You're a Man by [info - livejournal.com] cho_malfoy 3/5
Supernatural. 5300 words. Dean completed a journey in the body he was born with, but just because he's started a new journey doesn't mean he's likely to forget the last one.
Enjoyable, but I wasn't really loving it. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: SGA

Untitled by [info]telesilla 3/5
700 words. Ronon is a college professor. John is a vet going back to school.
Cute. )

Take It by [info]usomitai 2/5
43,700 words. When Atlantis goes out of control, John finds himself getting pulled into the chaos, taking Rodney with him.
I like in theory that there was a story where alien tech made them do it (sort of) and it wasn't all happy roses, but in practice, I didn't really like the way it was executed. )

A Supermarket in California by [info]taffetablue 2/5
7600 words. John owns a market in Berkeley and Rodney is a professor at UCB.
Decently written, but it just reads like one long list of McShep cliches, which I suppose is great if you like that sort of thing. )

The Hotline by [info]nixa_jane 1/5
4200 words. John/Rodney. They kept running these corny little phone sex infomercials that had seemed really pathetic and funny at one o'clock, and somehow had morphed into 'good idea' by three.
OOC and exposition-heavy. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: Stargate: Atlantis

Oh hey, would you look at that. I took a break in my fanfic reading, but I had a couple reviews written up on my harddrive, and then the last two were holiday exchange fics I betaed that I can now talk about after reveals, and tada, magically there's a review post.

Right Here Next to Yesterday by [info]sageness 3/5
5300 words. Kate woke to the chirp of a radio and the rustle of Teyla digging her earpiece from the tangle of clothing on the floor.
That rare bird, female to male genderswap. )

Stationery Orbit by [info]busaikko 3/5
800 words. In which the team and Elizabeth are items in a small child's pencil box.
I'm normally not a huge fan of this sort of fic, but this was cute. )

On the Bunny Trail by [info]busaikko 3/5
5400 words. The team takes a holiday on a planet where they herd fluffy bunnies.
Cute and funny. )

It's Growing Day by Day by [info]telesilla 4/5 Recommended
27,500 words. During a routine mission to check out an off-world Ancient lab, team Shep is cut off from Atlantis when the stargate is buried beneath a ton of rubble. There's another way off the planet, but getting there will not be easy.
Didn't sound like my thing, but I ended up really liking it. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: Stargate: Atlantis

Normally I try not to post just one review at a time, but this story frustrated me so, I really want to talk about it, and I have no other SGA reviews yet, so.

A New Day at Midnight by [info]cesperanza 1/5
1000 words. Rodney always knew he was gay just like he always knew there was life on other worlds, which is to say, not at all, but he wasn't the least bit surprised when it happened.
Wow, this short fic somehow manages to perfectly encapsulate everything I hate about so much slash, *and* have the message 'appropriation is awesome'. It's pretty impressive, really. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: SGA

Your Cowboy Days Are Over (Mammas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys) by [info]samdonne 3/5
59,000 words. "You did what you had to do," Frank Sheppard says. "You come back from war an asshole, but you don't have to stay that way."
Really good worldbuilding and some very cool ideas, but it always seemed to be focusing on stuff I didn't find interesting and ignoring the stuff I did. )

No Explanations Necessary by [info]tzi and [info]zagnathi 1/5
45,700 words. Five years later, Rodney was finally accustomed to the changes in his life. He worked in consulting for the SGC, visited with his sister, and expended an indecent amount of time attending soccer games. Life was easy and predictable, with obligations and responsibilities he took very seriously and no saving of the world involved at all. He didn't miss it, really. Until the day he looked up and saw John Sheppard on the sidelines, watching his son with dark, hooded eyes.
Runs the gamut from mildly unbelievable to rage inducing, with a lot of just general badness in between. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: Stargate: Atlantis

I haven't been reading much fanfic lately thanks to all the manga I've been reading (plus I have one fic that I'm just sort of stuck on), so these have been building up over the last month or so.

If You Want to Kiss the Sky by [info]siegeofangels 3/5
8400 words. The military has rules, and John knows he has to play by them to get what he wants.
Interesting, thought-provoking idea, but I'm not sure how much I actually enjoyed the story itself. )

Push Until It Holds by [info]zillah975 5/5 Recommended
53,000 words. Ronon has known all his life that the three pillars of victory are honor, loyalty, and unity. He's been a member of Sheppard's team for two years when the team to which he owes his first loyalty finds him again, during a time when Ronon must question whether his loyalty to Atlantis is returned. Torn, he chooses the team he believes needs him the most, but the price is more than just the home he's come to love, and the reward may be betrayal and death, or worse.
The John/Ronon fic I've been waiting for! )

At the Company Picnic by [info]busaikko 3/5
600 words. Jeannie finds herself standing with Kavanagh at the company picnic buffet.
Short Jeannie-POV sequel to A Hundred Happy Things, written for mcsmooch, which should tell you all you need to know. )

Missing/Inaction by [info]crysothemis 3/5
3500 words. Ronon's not good at waiting, but he does have some other skills.
Guh. Hot. )

Untitled by [info]zillah975 3/5
500 words. But some days Teyla's hair just won't stay pulled back, and it flies in her face and clings to her sweat, gets in her eyes. Ronon is the only one who takes advantage of it.
Enjoyable. )

We Are, for Some Reason, All the Time, Bleeding by [info]busaikko 5/5 Recommended
2200 words. John/Rodney. Lines are crossed, but not the right ones.
Completely fucked up and awesome. )

Travis [userpic]
McShep Match reviews, days 6-10

Day 6: Weakest Link

All the Pharaoh's Men by [info]ladyamarra 2/5
7900 words. Rodney is captured and put to work building some sort of pyramid.
Rodney-centric gen, wtf!? That aside, the writing is okay, but the plot didn't really interest me. )

Fault Lines by [info]moonlettuce 2/5
18,700 words. When John Sheppard was thirty-nine, the Wraith made him a Runner.
Not as promising as the summary made it sound, due to a mix of technical problems and being too romantic. )

Day 7: Zero Tolerance

Never Going Home by [info]bluflamingo 2/5
10,900 words. John believes in miracles, in last minute saves, in the impossible. He's lived all of them. He also believes in small, random things that kill people; in the end you don't see coming, in the impossible-in-a-bad-way.
Started off interesting enough, but ended up being sappy and not my thing. )

Unpredictable by [info]emeraldsword 2/5
9800 words. In which Rodney keeps getting everyone arrested, Zelenka has cake-related schemes, Teyla has a saying and John has choices to make...
Misspelt names = off to a bad start... )

Day 8: Quid Pro Quo

A Moment's Consideration by [info]monanotlisa 2/5 - Did not finish
9300 words. Rodney is a lawyer John hires to sort out the family business.
Show, don't tell. Please, please stop with the telling! I wanted to keep reading this because I was actually curious about the story, but so. much. telling. )

Good Neighbor Policy by [info]lamardeuse 2/5
6900 words. His whole life, home had been something that happened to other people.
Cute, pretty typical shippy stuff. Didn't grab me. )

Day 9: Drop in the Ocean

Tied Up Inside by [info]gblvr 2/5
8000 words. Sometimes you just need to go away to figure out where you really belong.
Neat idea, but I found myself wanting to know more about the alternate universe than the romance plot. )

One of These Things Is Not Like the Others by [info]soleta 2/5
12,000 words. When the team is abducted on a routine mission, John is presented with more complications than anyone could have foreseen.
Interesting idea and fairly enjoyable, but the slap-dash worldbuilding bugged me. )

Day 10: Eye for an Eye

Blink by [info]lavvyan 5/5 Recommended
4900 words. I am going to tell you a story. About Dr. McKay and how he bought an eye from me, and how that one small act led to the strangest night in my entire life.
Wow. So awesome! The kind of cyberpunk story you don't see very often in fandom. )

Illumination by [info]burkesl17 1/5
9300 words. He screamed as his vision was filled with the sharp metal syringe and the pastor shouted in his head as the pain hit, "An eye for an eye, John Sheppard, an eye for an eye..."
The summary sounds much cooler than the fic ends up being. Major punctuation problems and vaguely skeevy disability issues. )

BTW, I never thought to say this before, but I welcome discussion on these posts (in fact, I'd love it). So don't hesitate to comment.

Disappointing start for the Match. )

Mission: Improbable by [info]sageness 2/5
7600 words. Mission Impossible AU.
Surprisingly boring. )

Day 2: Pound of Flesh

Shadows Cast by Outward Things by [info]wesleysgirl 2/5
9500 words. A mysterious disappearance on a planet they're visiting reminds Rodney of something from his own childhood.
Interesting plot, but would have been better as gen. )

Little by Little to the Truth; or a Narrative of the Atlantis Expedition by [info]telesilla 3/5
5700 words. It's 1904 and Lady Elizabeth Weir, Dowager Countess Menlow and Head of the Atlantis Expedition, is the widow of an English noble; Colonel John Patrick Sheppard, US Army Reserve, is a Spanish-American War veteran who's also piloted airships and tested aeroplanes and motorcars, and Doctor Meredith R. McKay, smartest man in two galaxies, is the inventor of the first Patented Completely Portable Personal Computing Machine. And yet, things are strangely familiar.
Very neat setting. )
