Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 23 & 24

Getting near the end! Soon I will actually be reading and reviewing stuff other than SGA again. XD

Day 23: Sleight of Hand

Like Pulling a Rabbit Out of a Hat by [info - livejournal.com] curia_regis 2/5
5300 words. When they discover alien ships heading towards Atlantis, Rodney has yet another brilliant plan to save them. Unfortunately, this plan goes horribly wrong.
Another one without an ending... )

Imagine Whirled Peas by [info - livejournal.com] flyakate 2/5
1300 words. In which there are failed magic tricks, peanut butter and naps. Or, John and Rodney, Supportive Uncles and Master Babysitters.
Cute. )

Day 24: Open Season

Good Hunting by [info - livejournal.com] skinscript 3/5
8700 words. Atlantis sends teams to compete in the once in a generation Pegasus fighting competition Shaur'Atan. Once there, it's open season and everyone gets more than they bargained for.
Neat idea, though the ending was rushed. )

Daytime Drama by [info - livejournal.com] hyperfocused 1/5
9500 words. Will hero pilot John Sheppard accept the offer to start a new life as soap opera hunk Shep Johnson? Will "Atlantis!" wunderkind Rodney McKay (Rod Ingram/Meredith Ingram/series co-writer) finally win his first Zeddy? Will they find love, on-screen or off? Tune in past the cut to find out.
Ridiculous and offensive. )

Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 21 & 22

Day 21: Fish Out of Water

Grace, Too by [info - livejournal.com] perspi 3/5
1400 words. "One dance, and then we'll talk cease-fire," John promises, using his free hand to carefully slide Rodney's glasses off and fold them into his shirt pocket. "You'll be home in an hour."
Probably would have given it a four or five if not for the ending. )

Day 22: Coup de Grâce

The Dread and Fear of Kings by [info - livejournal.com] valderys 2/5
8400 words. They were used to odd happenings and sudden danger, even on Atlantis itself. A woman's voice calling John to come away? That wasn't even a blip on the scanner - until John began to listen to it.
Was interesting at first, but took a sharp left turn into Not My Thing. )

Twice Blessed by [info - livejournal.com] chellefic 3/5
10,800 words. Even when things are peaceful, John can't seem to keep from doing dangerous things.
I wasn't totally happy with the ending, but overall it was pretty good. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 19 & 20

Day 19: Creature Comforts

Technical Perspective: A Civilised Discourse in Interior Design by [info - livejournal.com] pennyplainknits 2/5
13,800 words. Interior Designers AU, based very loosely on the Doris Day movie Pillow Talk. John Sheppard is a reclusive new designer, who invents an alter ego in order to get close to sarcastic but genius designer Rodney McKay, of Athos Partners. But what is truth, and what is a lie? And what will Rodney do when he finds out?
Cute, but reminded me how much I hate the romance novel/romcom formula. )

Bargaining by [info - livejournal.com] elementalv 1/5
3000 words. "Broken. Dick."
Not nearly as interesting as the summary makes it sound. )

Day 20: Writing on the Wall

Late for the Arrival by [info - livejournal.com] deltacephei 2/5
8200 words. It was no secret that people weren't Rodney's strong suit. This was probably the reason why he hadn't caught on before. The proverbial clue bus had rolled by four times before realization finally hit him like an expertly delivered kick to the head.
Cute enough if you like this type of story. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 17 & 18

Day 17: Line in the Sand

Saving Sheppard by [info - livejournal.com] ldyanne 1/5
10,200 words. Rodney was eight the first time he met Death.
Way too much woobie!Rodney for me. )

Day 18: Down to Earth

Like Gravity (It Doesn't Matter if You Believe in It) by [info - livejournal.com] pogrebin 4/5 Recommended
5000 words. What's left after the war is over; a series of snapshots in a life.
Feels very real. )

Grounded by [info - livejournal.com] kassrachel 2/5
6500 words. "Good news," John said, apparently ignoring his question. "Atlantis is returning to Pegasus!"
Enjoyable. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 15 & 16

Day 15: Paper Tiger

Something to Remember You By by [info - livejournal.com] hestia_lacey 3/5
17,000 words. In 1942, John Sheppard meets Rodney McKay.
Enjoyable. )

Walking Backwards by [info - livejournal.com] wintercreek 2/5
9300 words. Rodney's getting everything he always thought he wanted. But what if he already had it and didn't know?
Resolved way too easily. )

Day 16: Fool's Paradise

Fly Away by [info - livejournal.com] badwolf36 2/5
8300 words. Rodney has his perfect life with John on a sabbatical away from Atlantis. And a few nightmares were just the rewards of actually surviving to retirement age in the Pegasus Galaxy. Nothing to worry about at all.
Neat idea, but the writing is just not up to the job. )

He Makes a Solitude and Calls It Peace by [info - livejournal.com] villainy 2/5
10,200 words. "I always thought the Vulcans had a point."
Interesting idea, but it felt like it wrapped up too quickly. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 11, 12, 13

There are no reviews for Day 14 because both teams were art, so I'm including Day 13 with this one.

Day 11: Leave of Absence

Wake by [info - livejournal.com] my_scheherazade 2/5
14,000 words. "Oh the blood and the treasure, and then losing it all. The time that we wasted, and the place where we fall. Will we wake in the morning and know what it was for, up in our bedroom, after the war?" -- The Beginning After the End by Stars
Not as good as I'd hoped it would be. )

Day 12: Balance of Power

Epiphanies Aren't Just For Ancients (and Other Hard Learned Lessons) by [info - livejournal.com] reddwarfer and [info - livejournal.com] djin7 2/5
14,500 words. John Sheppard knows that sometimes, the quickest way to end a war is to lose it. But if he has to go down, he's taking Rodney with him.
Decent story, but not really my thing. )

(Murphy's) Laws of War by [info - livejournal.com] mirasol 1/5
2100 words. It is a bad thing to run out of airspeed, altitude and ideas all at the same time.
Bland. )

Day 13: Feet of Clay

Sticks and Stones (May Break My Bones But Words Will Never Hurt Me) by [info - livejournal.com] emeraldsword 2/5
4200 words. "Are we going to crawl in there, assuming I can even fit through that gap, to get our faces chewed off by rodents with space-rabies?"
Could have been good with some editing. )

The Weakness See by [info - livejournal.com] mamadeb 1/5
3400 words. For once, no one was attacking them.
Laughably OOC. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 9 & 10

Oh right, I was posting these... XD

Day 9: Call of the Wild

Storm Front by [info - livejournal.com] lavvyan 3/5
3400 words. "What, so I'm going to end up a vegetable in some hospital bed while my mind goes frolicking among the waves, is that it?"
Interesting, but I felt like it was retreading the same ground as canon. )

Romance Not Included by [info - livejournal.com] danceswithgary 2/5
19,800 words. There's one important thing to remember about islands; the only way to guarantee you'll find what you're looking for is to bring it with you.
Fairly cute, but had some icky misogyny and pacing problems. )

Day 10: Point of No Return

Shine Like the Sun by [info - livejournal.com] busaikko 4/5 Recommended
7200 words. Detective John Sheppard knew Ava Dixon was trouble as soon as she walked into his office looking for her brother.
Awesome AU. )

Those Three Words by [info - livejournal.com] argosy 3/5
5700 words. John has something he wants to say, but it won't be easy.
Cute, though not really my thing. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 7 & 8

Day 7: Knock on Wood

Wait, stories need endings? )

7-9-13 by [info - livejournal.com] pollitt 2/5
1900 words. Rodney finds his faith.
Peace doesn't have to mean dull... )

Five Things That Were in the Cards, Or, How Love Saved the Pegasus Galaxy by [info - livejournal.com] eccentricweft 2/5
3100 words. John wondered if there was a card for "miraculously turn gay and fall in love with your best friend."
Took a sudden turn for bad at the end. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 5 & 6

Day 5: Dead Letter

The Color of His Heartbeat by [info - livejournal.com] sonadorita 2/5
6300 words. After a tragic explosion, Rodney is caught between believing in alien tales and doubting his own sanity.
Okay story, clunky prose. )

Day 6: Around the Clock

The Ethical Life by [info - livejournal.com] sabinelagrande 4/5 Recommended
5900 words. Rodney's system is already perfect, but it could be better.
Really cute WWII AU. )

Pulled Out from Inside by [info - livejournal.com] altyronsmaker 1/5
15,400 words. While exploring an uninhabited planet for future recreational use, John's team gets kidnapped, and he must fight his way to the outpost beyond the Ancient City to take back the team that was stolen.
Really contrived and pointless. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 3 & 4

Day 3: A House Divided

War Games by [info - livejournal.com] kisahawklin 2/5
2000 words. Sheppard needed Rodney for his plan to work. Convincing Rodney was the hardest part of the plan.
I didn't really get the point. )

A Heart Needs a Home by [info - livejournal.com] shrift 2/5
5500 words. Sometimes when a door closes, a closet opens.
Feels like I've read it a million times. )

Day 4: Skin and Bone

The Ones You Leave Behind by [info - livejournal.com] taste_is_sweet 5/5 Recommended
30,000 words. "I love you," Rodney said. "You can't die anymore."
Daaaaaaaamn. It's like a super creepy giant robo anime. )

That Will Break You by [info - livejournal.com] mz_bstone 2/5
8500 words. Life can break your bones. It can also stitch you back together.
Interesting idea, but really needed to be fleshed out. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: McShep Match Days 1 & 2

Well, I still haven't finished reading everything for Match, but I figured now that the names have been revealed, I can start posting the reviews for what I have read.

Day 1: Top of the World

Atmosphere by [info - livejournal.com] indy_go 2/5
2900 words. Nowhere else to go but up.
Cute enough if you like fluff, but even then it's pretty bland. )

Day 2: Tilting at Windmills

Where the Brave Dare Not Go by [info - livejournal.com] telesilla 4/5 Recommended
18,000 words. John Sheppard has had over twenty years to come to grips with the fact that every four or five weeks, he turns into a mountain lion. Like most Were, he accepts that that's just the way it is, and so he's not particularly interested when he learns that researchers at the local university are trying to to develop drugs that will help Were control their cycles. Then he meets Dr. Rodney McKay, a brilliant but irascible biochemist with reasons of his own for spearheading the university's Were research and John suddenly finds himself struggling with more than just his attraction to McKay.
I really enjoyed this, despite not being a fan of the werewolf genre. )

The Ingenious Dr. Rodney McKay of Atlantis by [info - livejournal.com] propinquitine 2/5
10,600 words. Who would have thought that defeating the Wraith was the least of Rodney's worries?
Fairly well-written old-school-feeling slash. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: SGA

Temporary Vanity by [info - livejournal.com] sugargroupie 3/5
200 words. Teyla is not impressed with Earth's hair-straightening techniques.
Cute, though I wish it had gone into a little more detail. )

Paraphiliac by [info - livejournal.com] sabinetzin 3/5
800 words. There are a lot of things that John wishes he could unlearn.
Didn't quite live up to its promise. )

Strangers to Each Other by [info - livejournal.com] telesilla 3/5
900 words. As always, John is a man with a plan.
Awkward sex. My favorite! )

John, When He's Gone by [info - livejournal.com] busaikko 5/5 Recommended
2200 words. He figures John won't know what his virginity would go for on eBay, so he names a price that makes John look at the door, and at the PlayStation, and at the bed.
Creepy and disturbing and oh so awesome. )

Travis [userpic]

The 40 mg Job by [info - livejournal.com] norah 3/5
Leverage. 3800 words. Parker takes the Second Act Rehabilitation Center therapist's advice seriously.
Cute. )

Not Proper (Chinese Boxes Remix) by [info - livejournal.com] penknife 3/5

Liam Neeson/Christian Bale. 9400 words. Liam hires Christian for the night, but when the night's over, he's interested in more than one night's work. Christian's never spent the night with someone who has this kind of money before, and money sometimes makes all the difference in the world...
Not really my thing, but well-enough written that it's still enjoyable. If you like D/s training type stories, you'll probably like it a lot more. )

Sharp Left Turn by [info - livejournal.com] temve 3/5
Ewan McGregor/Liam Neeson. 2000 words. When Ewan's bike crashes on a deserted country lane on a dark and stormy night, he thinks his life is over. And, in a way, he's right. Technically speaking.
This was actually hilarious. )

Hacker, Me? by [info - livejournal.com] temve 3/5
Ewan McGregor/Liam Neeson. 600 words. Pixels or not, Liam has the best view in the world.
Enjoyable. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: Harry Potter

So uh, apparently last year I never read any more remixes than the one that was written for me? D: Or at least not in HP, because this review has been sitting on my hard drive for over a year as I waited and waited to get back to reading remixes and never did. *sigh* But I did read a remix this year! And the fic it was based on. And had one other HP review sitting around. And four reviews makes a post! So.

3500 words. Remus runs into Severus at a party. Things have changed since they saw each other last.
After reading this and thinking it over for quite some time, I'm still unsure what I think about it. )

Points Where All Shadows Meet by [info - livejournal.com] osmalic 3/5
1800 words. At this point (and that point), Severus Snape thinks he can leave it all behind.
Well-written, but the focus wasn't on what I was interested in. )

Cast a Long Shadow (We All Meet in the End) by [info - livejournal.com] edenfalling 5/5 Recommended
8500 words. Lily left empty places behind her.
Excellent Petunia fic. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: 2 SPN Big Bangs

Hmm, I'm tired of long fics. Time to take a break from Big Bang and read some Remix maybe.

I've Seen the Future, Brother (It Is Murder) by [info - livejournal.com] kroki_refur 4/5 Recommended
37,500 words. It’s May second, and tomorrow is the first day of the end of the world, but Dean doesn’t know that.
Awesome. )

And God, I Know I'm One by [info - livejournal.com] newredshoes 1/5
20,000 words. So Sam is willing to let his younger brother find their missing dad all by himself, but when his fiancee Jessica disappears, he'll drop his position at a D.C. law firm and hit the road to hunt again? Fine. Whatever. Dean can deal with that, just like he can deal with the strange dreams and crippling headaches. The demons, though? That part he doesn't want to do alone.
Nothing more than a 20,000 word partial summary of a promising AU. Why is there not a warning for THIS? )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: Supernatural

One Big Bang and a couple others. All recs! Amazing.

As I Descend the Stair by [info - livejournal.com]busaikko 4/5 Recommended
5900 words. Life, as it flashes before the eyes: "I don't know how to be what anybody expects --" and Sam's hand draws a sharp head-to-toe line -- "but I was halfway to figuring out how to be me."
Finally an SPN transfic that's not about Dean! )

Dead Soldiers: An Oral History of the End Times by [info - livejournal.com]fryadvocate 5/5 Recommended
43,400 words. Although much has been written about the sociological and theological importance of the "End Times War", there has been much less written about the individuals directly involved. Using interviews with primary sources, this paper seeks to examine how Dean and Sam Winchester, two criminals with a history of violence and petty theft, became commonly known as a prophet of the Lord and the Anti-Christ.
How could you not want to read it with that summary? In a word: awesome. )

Accidents Will Happen by [info - livejournal.com]holli 4/5 Recommended
6400 words. Some Goth teenagers accidentally resurrect John Winchester. No, seriously.
Hilarious. )

Travis [userpic]
Fic reviews: lgbtfest (West Wing & Leverage)

The West Wing. 1900 words. They've been together for two years. Now Donna's dropped a bombshell on Josh. What's next?
Enjoyable, even not knowing the fandom. )

The Pattern of All the Process by [info - livejournal.com]raedbard 4/5 Recommended
The West Wing. 19,000 words. At the Emergency Room the doctor calls Huck your brother. Molly doesn't bother to correct him, neither does dad, not at first anyway, though she does wonder -- not for the first time -- why, with her short hair and dungarees, she never gets mistaken for a boy anymore.
I liked the story, but not the writing style. )

Making Your Bed in the Prison of Your Mind by [info - livejournal.com]merle_p 3/5
Leverage. 3000 words. There are a lot of reasons why coming out is a bad idea.
Interesting, but I couldn't really get into it. )

The Epiphany Job by [info - livejournal.com]shrift 5/5 Recommended
Leverage. 3600 words. When he rolled out of bed that afternoon, heated up some Philly Steak & Cheese Hot Pockets for breakfast, and then went to the office, Alec Hardison was not expecting to experience a paradigm shift.
Oh man, this is so awesome. )

Fics this long usually take me several days to read as I tend to wander away and do other stuff, but I read this all in one sitting. )

Not Paige, Please by [info] - livejournal.comamadi 5/5 Recommended
2500 words. It's hard enough being a part of the Walker family as it is. Much worse when you don't have an expected ally.
Really feels like it could be an episode. )

Growing Up Paige by [info] - livejournal.comamadi 3/5
2500 words. Scenes from the life of a Walker family grandchild.
Nice collection of vignettes in the same universe as the fic above. )

Between Two Rooms by [info] - livejournal.comromanticalgirl 4/5 Recommended

Feels like it could be canon. )

1200 words. Saul was nineteen the first time he kissed another man. It felt as though the world was ending. Now, half a century later, Henry kisses him, and it feels less like disaster and more like rebirth.
A little too tell-y for me. )

Bring Him Home by [info] - livejournal.commarea67 1/5
1900 words. What if your mother has a different opinion of what "home" is?
Needs editing badly. )

I Beg Your Pardon, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden by [info] - livejournal.commerle_p 4/5 Recommended
3300 words. Two mothers, two sons.
Similar theme to the one above, but so much better. )

Featuring 4 hunters, 3 deals with the devil, 2 brothers, 1 blessing, and 1 curse.
This is just amazing. )

The Violet Hour by [info] - livejournal.comzooey_glass04 3/5
5500 words. In the bright glare of the overhead light it's impossible to ignore what he's been seeing all along: the broad, masculine shape of his sister's shoulders underneath the jacket.
Better than the other one that used this prompt, but my like never quite became love. )

Three Shots Fired by [info] - livejournal.comjargonelle 2/5
3000 words. Jo tries to find her place in the hunting community.
I wanted to like this more, because Jo! But alas. )

Bloody Knuckles by [info] - livejournal.comchasingtides 2/5
3800 words. Sam never figured a bar fight in Nowheresville, Tennessee would lead to learning so much about his brother - or the hunting community.
Exactly the sort of thing I dread from this fest: the exposition-heavy coming-out story. )

5900 words. Sam goes looking for new friends and finds something he never would have expected.
Cute. )

What a Man's Gotta Do by [info - livejournal.com] sto_helit_lace 2/5

Stargate: Atlantis. 2600 words. John has always been willing to pay the price for his career and to keep his people safe, but he's just found the one price he's not sure he can afford.
Surprisingly good considering how clueless the prompt was. )

Turn the Page by [info - livejournal.com] messageredacted 3/5
Supernatural. 9000 words. Sam hasn't seen his sister in four years. A lot more has changed than he ever imagined.
I would have liked this a lot more if it hadn't been wincest. )

Now You're a Man by [info - livejournal.com] cho_malfoy 3/5
Supernatural. 5300 words. Dean completed a journey in the body he was born with, but just because he's started a new journey doesn't mean he's likely to forget the last one.

Fic reviews: SGA

Untitled by [info]telesilla 3/5
700 words. Ronon is a college professor. John is a vet going back to school.
Cute. )

Take It by [info]usomitai 2/5
43,700 words. When Atlantis goes out of control, John finds himself getting pulled into the chaos, taking Rodney with him.
I like in theory that there was a story where alien tech made them do it (sort of) and it wasn't all happy roses, but in practice, I didn't really like the way it was executed. )

A Supermarket in California by [info]taffetablue 2/5
7600 words. John owns a market in Berkeley and Rodney is a professor at UCB.
Decently written, but it just reads like one long list of McShep cliches, which I suppose is great if you like that sort of thing. )

The Hotline by [info]nixa_jane 1/5
4200 words. John/Rodney. They kept running these corny little phone sex infomercials that had seemed really pathetic and funny at one o'clock, and somehow had morphed into 'good idea' by three.
OOC and exposition-heavy. )

Fic reviews: lgbtfest '08

Hrr, so. I had this last batch of [info]lgbtfest fics from last year that I never read. XD And now the fest is running again, so I figured I'd better get these out of the way first before I start on the new ones. ^_^;;

Needs editing. )

The Braid by [info]pandore27 2/5

Not really my style, but not horrible. )

Fantastica by [info]pandore27 2/5

I'm not sure why this is even labelled fanfic... )

A Remote Aspect by [info]lilfluffykitten 2/5
Dracula. 1600 words. Jonathan finds his enforced loneliness leads him to some uncomfortable realisations.
Fits the tone of the novel well, but I just wasn't feeling it. )

Marching Orders by [info]bwinter 3/5
Discworld. 2900 words. Polly's next war, and Maladicta.
Cute, though I think I would probably have enjoyed it more if I could actually remember much from Monstrous Regiment... )

How Stephen Colbert Proved Jon Stewart Is a Lady by [info]sarken 4/5 Recommended
Colbert Report. 4900 words. Stephen is a straight man. Stephen is attracted to Jon. Therefore, it logically follows that Jon must be a woman.
Hilarious. )

Fic reviews: Harry Potter

What's this, I actually have some reviews? I've been trying to read some fic every day, but one of them (which was SGA, so it's actually in another batch) was super long and ended up taking me weeks to read, so I still feel like I haven't read much fic. :p

Three Women Who Never Brushed Hermione's Hair by [info]wisdomeagle 4/5 Recommended

Platform Nine and Five-Sixteenths by [info]mtfierce 3/5
1800 words. Luna always considered the lack of imagination in the wizarding world to be one of many reasons Thomas Riddle was able to do all he had done. (She hated the so-smug anagram he made. Not that anagrams weren't neat, just that self-proclaimed honors were, well, premature at best, and if he really wanted to get rid of his muggle name, wouldn't he just call himself something else that didn't include it?)
Cute and very, very Luna. )

11,000 words. When Petunia grudgingly offers Snape sanctuary, the pair discover that they have certain things in common.
Well-written, but heavily jossed, which made me enjoy it less. )

6300 words. The Wizarding World has forgiven Snape, but Snape hasn't forgiven the Wizarding World. And gardening.
I am just not the audience for this fic. Shippers might like it, though. )
