Fic reviews: Harry Potter
3/21/09 02:25 am
What's this, I actually have some reviews? I've been trying to read some fic every day, but one of them (which was SGA, so it's actually in another batch) was super long and ended up taking me weeks to read, so I still feel like I haven't read much fic. :p
Three Women Who Never Brushed Hermione's Hair by wisdomeagle 4/5 Recommended 300 words. Habits learned in youth can't be untangled. ( I can totally see this being canon. )
Platform Nine and Five-Sixteenths by mtfierce 3/5 1800 words. Luna always considered the lack of imagination in the wizarding world to be one of many reasons Thomas Riddle was able to do all he had done. (She hated the so-smug anagram he made. Not that anagrams weren't neat, just that self-proclaimed honors were, well, premature at best, and if he really wanted to get rid of his muggle name, wouldn't he just call himself something else that didn't include it?) ( Cute and very, very Luna. )
An Unequal Magic by lyras 3/5 11,000 words. When Petunia grudgingly offers Snape sanctuary, the pair discover that they have certain things in common. ( Well-written, but heavily jossed, which made me enjoy it less. )
Thirteen Months by argosy 2/5 6300 words. The Wizarding World has forgiven Snape, but Snape hasn't forgiven the Wizarding World. And gardening. ( I am just not the audience for this fic. Shippers might like it, though. )

Fic reviews: Stargate: Atlantis
1/8/09 02:17 am
Oh hey, would you look at that. I took a break in my fanfic reading, but I had a couple reviews written up on my harddrive, and then the last two were holiday exchange fics I betaed that I can now talk about after reveals, and tada, magically there's a review post.
Right Here Next to Yesterday by sageness 3/5 5300 words. Kate woke to the chirp of a radio and the rustle of Teyla digging her earpiece from the tangle of clothing on the floor. ( That rare bird, female to male genderswap. )
Stationery Orbit by busaikko 3/5 800 words. In which the team and Elizabeth are items in a small child's pencil box. ( I'm normally not a huge fan of this sort of fic, but this was cute. )
On the Bunny Trail by busaikko 3/5 5400 words. The team takes a holiday on a planet where they herd fluffy bunnies. ( Cute and funny. )
It's Growing Day by Day by telesilla 4/5 Recommended 27,500 words. During a routine mission to check out an off-world Ancient lab, team Shep is cut off from Atlantis when the stargate is buried beneath a ton of rubble. There's another way off the planet, but getting there will not be easy. ( Didn't sound like my thing, but I ended up really liking it. )
More, More Yuletide reviews
1/3/09 12:15 am
Ten more and I still haven't finished my first pass. I ended in the Bs, so unless there turn out to be a ton of small A fandoms I know, the final first pass batch will probably be smaller.
Tension by lucathia_rykatu 3/5 Bakuman. 1400 words. Mashiro and Takagi argue over the reason for the popularity of their most recent chapter in Jump, disagreeing about the 'tension' between the characters. ( Cute, though the writing could use some work. )
The Sandwich Story by obfuscate3 4/5 Recommended Calvin and Hobbes. 1300 words. Calvin grows up. ( Loved the ending. )
The Tiger Song by rabidsamfan 3/5 Calvin and Hobbes. 100 words. Hobbes makes Calvin sing a song about the awesomeness of tigers. ( Cute. )
Heaven by LMT 4/5 Recommended Closer. 1500 words. Larry comes to the strip club again, looking for Alice. ( Great missing scene. )
Out of the Dark by technosage 5/5 Recommended Dr. Seuss. 1300 words. They shouldn't have been in the park that night. It came from out of the dark, into their lives, into their hearts. ( Damn, this is completely awesome. Dr. Seuss horror. )
I Am Not Clark, My Name Is Pete by googlebrat 4/5 Recommended Dr. Seuss. 1200 words. These children found me, in the park. They took me home. They called me Clark. ( Very impressive! )
There Is No I or You by nyssa23 3/5 Frasier. 1300 words. Niles tries to communicate with Daphne using someone else's poetry. ( Good voices for all the characters. )
What Happened After by steelneko 2/5 The Dixie Chicks' "Goodbye Earl". 400 words. The police did find Earl eventually. ( Very summary-ish epilogue to the song. )
Strawberry Jam by vampedvixen 3/5 The Dixie Chicks' "Goodbye Earl". 1800 words. The story of Wanda and Mary Anne. ( Fleshes out the song some, but doesn't add much )
Suddenly I See by norah 3/5 So You Think You Can Dance. 6200 words. Being on the show is a journey, all right. But it's not just about dancing. ( Cute. No canon knowledge necessary. )

1/1/09 12:47 am
Still not done with my first pass through, but here are another ten. I might get a final first-pass batch up sometime later tonight before going to bed. I've seen lots of stuff I really want to read as I went through, but as I said before, I'm holding off on any larger fandoms and only reading stuff with one or two fics. (Also holding off on anything with fics that seem too long.)
Wind in the East 5/5 Recommended Mary Poppins. 3200 words. Mary Poppins is magic. Bert has known this since he was nine years old. ( This is totally my canon now. )
Overture 3/5 Mary Poppins. 1000 words. Bert and Mary's first meeting. ( Cute, but suffers from being read after the one above. )
Audition 2/5 The Decemberists' "The Mariner's Revenge Song". 1800 words. The narrator of the song joins up with the pirates. ( Didn't really feel anything like the song to me. )
Final Moments 4/5 Recommended The Decemberists' "The Mariner's Revenge Song". 3200 words. After fifteen years of waiting, the widow's daughter finally gets her hands on the captain. ( Now this one fits the song perfectly. )
Rarely Told in Full 4/5 Recommended Lemony Snicket. 2100 words. And if a woman you loved for years says, "I love you, but I can not be with you and I hope this two hundred page book I have sent with your engagement ring explains why," you would likely look over the fact that she still loves you and instead focus on the fact that she is now married to another man and pregnant. ( Great Snicket voice. )
All's Fair in Love 2/5 Kusatta Kyoushi no Houteishiki. 3400 words. Masayoshi wants something Atsushi isn't sure he can give. ( Oh dear. Just bad. )
One Night at the Pizza Pizza 3/5 Moxy Fruvous' "King of Spain". 800 words. Life may never be the same again at the Pizza Pizza for this former King of Spain. ( Great up until the super-rushed ending. :-/ )
Coffee with Membrane 1/5 Invader Zim. 1000 words. Zim and Professor Membrane chat. ( This is like all those horribly unfunny Zim fics I found on FFN. )
Back to the Hideous Future 5/5 Recommended Invader Zim. 1700 words. The more things change, the more things stay the same. Particularly Dib's unfortunately prominent forehead. ( Best Zim fic I've ever read, hands down. )
Animals! Heed the Story of Kun 2/5 Wicked. 600 words. Students of Ozian history may be interested to know that the propaganda of the Glorious Wizard was not directed solely towards non-Animals. ( Doesn't quite live up to its promise. )
Current Music: Curio - Kimi ni Fureru Dake de
Yuletide reviews: xkcd, Ugly Betty, Penny Arcade, Paradise Kiss, and Kavalier & Clay
12/26/08 10:37 pm
I decided to start at the end of the archive and go backwards, though I skipped over a lot of fandoms that had more than three fics each as I figured I'd make individual fandom review posts for those.
The Amazing Adventures of Hat Guy and the Girl Who Stole His Hat 5/5 Recommended xkcd. 1000 words. It's not all fun and games, being an evil dude in an evil hat. Except, it kind of is. ( Perfectly captures the feel of the comic. )
OMG Velociraptors! 4/5 Recommended xkcd. 300 words. It started with velociraptors and ended with the LHC. ( Totally feels like it could be a strip. )
I Could Never Be Your Woman 3/5 Ugly Betty. 2200 words. Christina catches Daniel trying on women's clothes, trying to figure out what made Alex want to be a woman. ( Good idea turned out to be nothing but a vehicle for porn. )
Marc's Guide to Dating 1/5 Ugly Betty. 1000 words. Daniel decides he's "gay curious" and goes to Marc for advice. ( This was so bad it could have been on babb_chronicles. )
Hunting High and Low 4/5 Recommended A-ha's "Take on Me". 3100 words. Why is there always a pipe wrench when he needs one? ( Yes, Take on Me. This is pretty damn awesome, actually. )
You're Too Blind to See 2/5 Penny Arcade. 1300 words. The thing was, it really had all started off not much different from Gabe's usual sort of insanity. ( Trying to hard to be funny and thus ends up not funny at all. )
Loathing 1/5 Penny Arcade. 1200 words. Ever since he'd first played against Tycho Brahe, Johnathan Gabriel hated his guts. ( Wow, this is so bad. D: )
The Meeting: or How Gabe Came to Fight the Devil 4/5 Recommended Penny Arcade. 1200 words. "Everything was going great - That is, until he fought the devil." ( Backstory for the PA video game, but totally enjoyable even without having played it. )
Tears Dry on Their Own 2/5 Paradise Kiss. 2800 words. Time keeps moving forward, and Yukari still feels like she's racing to catch up. But she's not behind, not anymore. ( More a summary than a proper story. )
Fumbling Cartography 2/5 The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. 1200 words. A little vignette set the morning after a night with Tracy Bacon. ( I feel like this would have worked better as a drabble. )
Fic reviews: Stargate: Atlantis
11/2/08 06:12 am
Normally I try not to post just one review at a time, but this story frustrated me so, I really want to talk about it, and I have no other SGA reviews yet, so.
A New Day at Midnight by cesperanza 1/5 1000 words. Rodney always knew he was gay just like he always knew there was life on other worlds, which is to say, not at all, but he wasn't the least bit surprised when it happened. ( Wow, this short fic somehow manages to perfectly encapsulate everything I hate about so much slash, *and* have the message 'appropriation is awesome'. It's pretty impressive, really. )
Fic reviews: Misc. films and manga
10/28/08 04:43 am
Hey, more reviews that have been building up for a while.
Lady in the Looking Glass by jackandahat 4/5 Recommended Breakfast on Pluto. 1300 words. You have to start somewhere, and in front of the mirror's as good a place as any... ( Loved this look at young Charlie and Patrick. )
Making Changes by jackandahat 4/5 Recommended Breakfast on Pluto. 500 words. But there's still hints, the line of her jaw and the length of her hands. Nothing that can be helped, nothing she can't live with, but this... she touches her hair again, curling a lock around her finger as she looks in the mirror... this she can change. ( Excellent. )
Talk of the Town by makesmewannadie 4/5 Recommended Cars. 5500 words. Everyone noticed Sarge was different when he returned to Radiator Springs. Only Fillmore said, if he was around to hear them, "Naw, man, he's not really any different." But that was Fillmore, and God only knew what he'd been putting in that organic fuel of his, so nobody listened. The thing was, Fillmore was right. Sarge wasn't really any different. ( This is totally adorable and fits in perfectly with canon. )
Nova by puella_nerdii 4/5 Recommended Death Note. 2300 words. "This is different," Misa says. "People are watching us because they love us." ( Exactly the sort of fucked-up dynamic I love about them in canon. )
Fic reviews: Misc. RPF
10/26/08 03:50 am
Fic reviews: Invader Zim
10/24/08 03:18 am
Because I haven't been reading much fic lately, I decided to go through the bits and bobs I had collected in my "reviews" file and see if I had enough for some posts.
So...ages ago I was determined to read some Zim fic and see if anything wasn't dreck. Unfortunately most of the fandom is on FFN, which I hate trolling through even more than I hate LJ comms. I managed to find ten fics that didn't sound completely horrible, so I delicioused them, but now I find I just really don't want to go back to them. I know I'm probably not going to find anything good because even the ones I bookmarked barely sounded passable and I just don't feel like it. So here are two I read back when I first bookmarked them, and two from last year's Yuletide.
Gir and the Jehovah's Witnesses by Rabbit's Paw 2/5 600 words. When Zim goes to skool Gir gets a couple of visitors! ( Not horrible, but the funny lines were all just quotes from the show. )
A Guilty Pleasure by The Dramatic Monarch 2/5 1200 words. After a long and tiresome day, Zim and GIR indulge in a guilty pleasure. ( Again, not horrible, but not good, either. )
One Week by cadetdru 4/5 Recommended 2200 words. Dib has to write a journal about his week as homework; of course it's all about Zim. ( Zim fic that doesn't suck ass! Woohoo! )
A Small Story by basingstoke 3/5 1100 words. The Tallest discover coffee and use it to stunt others' growth. ( Also pretty funny! )
Current Music: Tribe 8 - Oversize Ego
Fic reviews: Supernatural

Fic reviews: SGA
10/20/08 03:11 am
Your Cowboy Days Are Over (Mammas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys) by samdonne 3/5 59,000 words. "You did what you had to do," Frank Sheppard says. "You come back from war an asshole, but you don't have to stay that way." ( Really good worldbuilding and some very cool ideas, but it always seemed to be focusing on stuff I didn't find interesting and ignoring the stuff I did. )
No Explanations Necessary by tzi and zagnathi 1/5 45,700 words. Five years later, Rodney was finally accustomed to the changes in his life. He worked in consulting for the SGC, visited with his sister, and expended an indecent amount of time attending soccer games. Life was easy and predictable, with obligations and responsibilities he took very seriously and no saving of the world involved at all. He didn't miss it, really. Until the day he looked up and saw John Sheppard on the sidelines, watching his son with dark, hooded eyes. ( Runs the gamut from mildly unbelievable to rage inducing, with a lot of just general badness in between. )
Fic reviews: Stargate: Atlantis
9/29/08 02:40 am
I haven't been reading much fanfic lately thanks to all the manga I've been reading (plus I have one fic that I'm just sort of stuck on), so these have been building up over the last month or so.
If You Want to Kiss the Sky by siegeofangels 3/5 8400 words. The military has rules, and John knows he has to play by them to get what he wants. ( Interesting, thought-provoking idea, but I'm not sure how much I actually enjoyed the story itself. )
Push Until It Holds by zillah975 5/5 Recommended 53,000 words. Ronon has known all his life that the three pillars of victory are honor, loyalty, and unity. He's been a member of Sheppard's team for two years when the team to which he owes his first loyalty finds him again, during a time when Ronon must question whether his loyalty to Atlantis is returned. Torn, he chooses the team he believes needs him the most, but the price is more than just the home he's come to love, and the reward may be betrayal and death, or worse. ( The John/Ronon fic I've been waiting for! )
At the Company Picnic by busaikko 3/5 600 words. Jeannie finds herself standing with Kavanagh at the company picnic buffet. ( Short Jeannie-POV sequel to A Hundred Happy Things, written for mcsmooch, which should tell you all you need to know. )
Missing/Inaction by crysothemis 3/5 3500 words. Ronon's not good at waiting, but he does have some other skills. ( Guh. Hot. )
Untitled by zillah975 3/5 500 words. But some days Teyla's hair just won't stay pulled back, and it flies in her face and clings to her sweat, gets in her eyes. Ronon is the only one who takes advantage of it. ( Enjoyable. )
We Are, for Some Reason, All the Time, Bleeding by busaikko 5/5 Recommended 2200 words. John/Rodney. Lines are crossed, but not the right ones. ( Completely fucked up and awesome. )
Fic reviews: SPN and J2
8/2/08 01:03 am
All right, I had a request to do some spn_j2_bigbang stuff. I read three and didn't get any recs and by then I really wanted something shorter, so I read a couple of old ones I had tagged on delicious for ages (I really like being able to reverse sort). And wow, the one rec I did find is one of those rare stories I'd rate higher than a 5+ if I could. So awesome.
Into His Hand by drvsilla 3/5 50,500 words. JR Ackles is a professional bullrider at the top of his game. He's got one thing on his mind: winning the championship belt buckle and the right to call himself the best in the world. His unwavering dedication and focus is finally put to the test in the form of JT Padalecki, an up-and-coming rider new to the professional ranks, who has his sights set on winning the PBR finals - and Jensen. Cowboys ride and get by on grit and tough determination - the question facing Jensen is if they have to do it alone. ( Reads sort of like a modern day, happy ending Brokeback Mountain. Interesting look at cowboys, but it never really hooked me. )
The Learning Curve at Wakefield High by aynslee 2/5 - Didn't finish 22,200 words. When Jared accepts the job at Wakefield High, he expects the usual problems: lazy students, meddlesome parents, and an air conditioner that barely functions in the Texas heat. But he doesn't expect his biggest problem, which comes in the form of his new boss - Principal Jensen Ackles. ( I love school AUs in theory, whether they're about students or teachers, but in practice they're often not my thing, so while I was hopeful when I bookmarked this, I'm not terribly surprised that I didn't end up finishing it. )
Receiver by dotfic 3/5 21,700 words. In the wake of the events of "Fresh Blood," Sam and Dean find a hunt: a family whose youngest child has a monster in his closet. The Winchesters know exactly how to deal with monsters, but this hunt is a little too familiar. Sam starts to unravel while Dean's show falters. ( Felt like it could be an episode...but one of those episodes I don't like quite as much. Too much emphasis on family/brothers and too little on horror. )
Skinning Schrodinger's Cat by lyra_wing 3/5 3500 words. Sam travels back in time to try and fix things. ( This is one of those rare fics that actually reads *better* after further canon, rather than getting jossed. )
My Mother Was a Tailor by traveller 5/5 Recommended 2800 words. She checks her lips in the bronze mirror, makes sure the red is even and not bleeding out at the edges; she makes a pout and gets a blurry kiss reflected back. She dabs a little perfume on the beauty mark on her cheekbone, wets her hands with the pitcher and smoothes her hair. ( Wow, this is so very, very cool. Love the writing, the atmosphere, the ambiguity. Should absolutely be read without spoilers. )
Current Music: Amuro Namie - Sexy Girl
McShep Match reviews, days 6-10
7/23/08 05:02 am
Day 6: Weakest Link
All the Pharaoh's Men by ladyamarra 2/5 7900 words. Rodney is captured and put to work building some sort of pyramid. ( Rodney-centric gen, wtf!? That aside, the writing is okay, but the plot didn't really interest me. )
Fault Lines by moonlettuce 2/5 18,700 words. When John Sheppard was thirty-nine, the Wraith made him a Runner. ( Not as promising as the summary made it sound, due to a mix of technical problems and being too romantic. )
Day 7: Zero Tolerance
Never Going Home by bluflamingo 2/5 10,900 words. John believes in miracles, in last minute saves, in the impossible. He's lived all of them. He also believes in small, random things that kill people; in the end you don't see coming, in the impossible-in-a-bad-way. ( Started off interesting enough, but ended up being sappy and not my thing. )
Unpredictable by emeraldsword 2/5 9800 words. In which Rodney keeps getting everyone arrested, Zelenka has cake-related schemes, Teyla has a saying and John has choices to make... ( Misspelt names = off to a bad start... )
Day 8: Quid Pro Quo
A Moment's Consideration by monanotlisa 2/5 - Did not finish 9300 words. Rodney is a lawyer John hires to sort out the family business. ( Show, don't tell. Please, please stop with the telling! I wanted to keep reading this because I was actually curious about the story, but so. much. telling. )
Good Neighbor Policy by lamardeuse 2/5 6900 words. His whole life, home had been something that happened to other people. ( Cute, pretty typical shippy stuff. Didn't grab me. )
Day 9: Drop in the Ocean
Tied Up Inside by gblvr 2/5 8000 words. Sometimes you just need to go away to figure out where you really belong. ( Neat idea, but I found myself wanting to know more about the alternate universe than the romance plot. )
One of These Things Is Not Like the Others by soleta 2/5 12,000 words. When the team is abducted on a routine mission, John is presented with more complications than anyone could have foreseen. ( Interesting idea and fairly enjoyable, but the slap-dash worldbuilding bugged me. )
Day 10: Eye for an Eye
Blink by lavvyan 5/5 Recommended 4900 words. I am going to tell you a story. About Dr. McKay and how he bought an eye from me, and how that one small act led to the strangest night in my entire life. ( Wow. So awesome! The kind of cyberpunk story you don't see very often in fandom. )
Illumination by burkesl17 1/5 9300 words. He screamed as his vision was filled with the sharp metal syringe and the pastor shouted in his head as the pain hit, "An eye for an eye, John Sheppard, an eye for an eye..." ( The summary sounds much cooler than the fic ends up being. Major punctuation problems and vaguely skeevy disability issues. )
BTW, I never thought to say this before, but I welcome discussion on these posts (in fact, I'd love it). So don't hesitate to comment.
Current Music: Sugababes - Denial
McShep Match reviews, days 1-5
7/19/08 07:07 am
Day 1: Thief in the Night
Perchance to Dream by blueraccoon 1/5 4800 words. John and Rodney find themselves mysteriously trapped on a different planet each time they fall asleep. ( Disappointing start for the Match. )
Mission: Improbable by sageness 2/5 7600 words. Mission Impossible AU. ( Surprisingly boring. )
Day 2: Pound of Flesh
Shadows Cast by Outward Things by wesleysgirl 2/5 9500 words. A mysterious disappearance on a planet they're visiting reminds Rodney of something from his own childhood. ( Interesting plot, but would have been better as gen. )
Little by Little to the Truth; or a Narrative of the Atlantis Expedition by telesilla 3/5 5700 words. It's 1904 and Lady Elizabeth Weir, Dowager Countess Menlow and Head of the Atlantis Expedition, is the widow of an English noble; Colonel John Patrick Sheppard, US Army Reserve, is a Spanish-American War veteran who's also piloted airships and tested aeroplanes and motorcars, and Doctor Meredith R. McKay, smartest man in two galaxies, is the inventor of the first Patented Completely Portable Personal Computing Machine. And yet, things are strangely familiar. ( Very neat setting. )
Day 3: Dead Ringer
Attention Paid by roaringmice 1/5 - Did not finish 8900 words. John comes back from a mission and he's not quite himself. Rodney thinks he knows what's going on, but he doesn't know the half of it. ( Epithets and telling and clunkiness, oh my. )
By Whirlwind Scattered by busaikko 5/5 Recommended 5700 words. On the seventeenth day after the jumper crashed, Rodney realized that the man he was stranded with was not John Sheppard. ( So awesome. )
Day 4: Eleventh Hour
Less to Say by flatlanddan 1/5 4900 words. This place is kinda weird. Not life sucking aliens weird, but still kinda weird. ( This is one huge plothole. )
Near Things by kassrachel 2/5 4500 words. After each of them narrowly avoids marrying someone, John and Rodney realise life is too short. ( Random bits of AU or unfamiliarity with canon? You be the judge. )
Day 5: One for the Road
Future Imperfect by ldyanne 2/5 2800 words. Sometimes saying goodbye is the hardest thing to do. ( More 'not my thing' than 'really badly written', but still not great. )
Tonight and the Rest of My Life by velocitygrass 2/5 14,900 words. Rodney is suddenly allergic to Atlantis and must return to Earth. ( The sex scene goes on forever! )
Fic reviews: Stargate: Atlantis
6/19/08 03:35 pm
5/24/08 09:34 am
The Memory Remains by messageredacted 2/5 Supernatural. 6400 words. Sam always wanted to have a normal life. Why is that so hard to come by? ( Just felt unbelievable to me. )
Foundations by st_aurafina 5/5 Recommended Harry Potter. 3800 words. A thousand years or more ago, the first stones are being laid at Hogwarts and Rowena is determined that there will be no secrets between the four wizards. ( Excellent. )
A Hundred Happy Things by busaikko 5/5 Recommended Stargate: Atlantis. 30,000 words. Kaleb's long gone, Jeannie's got a career, Madison has problems, Rodney's got Inner Power!, and Sheppard...is pretty much the same. ( I wish I could give this higher than a 5! )
Current Music: Weezer - My Best Friend
5/15/08 02:56 am
I wanted to get another batch of these read before the reveal, so I picked shorter ones. XD As it happened, two were bad choices and I didn't even end up finishing them, so it went faster than I'd anticipated.
"Did You Know I'm Naked Underneath This T-Shirt" and Other Great Hits 4/5 Recommended 8700 words. While students at St Brutus', Harry and Draco become friends and form a band. ( Really fun AU. )
Wheels of Fire (The Official Autobiography of Harry Potter) 2/5 Didn't finish 9500 words. Harry's been wanting to publish an autobiography for years; only problem is, he can't write for peanuts. Enter Draco Malfoy: broke, surly and the best ghost writer in the business. ( I really wanted to like this, but... )
Even When Things Change 1/5 Didn't finish 5300 words. Draco and Harry are forced to be civil when their sons become friends. ( Ow. The writing is actually painful. )
Still Life in Wood and Parchment 3/5 6500 words. Al and Scorpius find a bunch of letters their fathers exchanged. ( Enjoyable. )
